At its 'Welcome Home' event on Tuesday, Apple unveiled the HomeView, a new smart display that integrates smart home controls, entertainment, and communication into a single device. The 7-inch display, featuring a Liquid Retina screen, is designed to be both a countertop and wall-mounted option, with a stainless steel hinge allowing users to tilt the display as needed.

The HomeView is powered by the A18 chip and 8GB of RAM, ensuring smooth performance and efficient multitasking. It supports Siri AI for voice control, which can run locally or via Private Cloud Compute, where data is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else, according to the company’s announcement.

With a supported iCloud+ subscription, the HomeView works with compatible cameras to deliver intelligent, end-to-end encrypted recognition of people, familiar faces, pets, packages, and vehicles, notifying the household the moment someone arrives at the front door. The device also provides video descriptions for HomeKit Secure Video footage, helping users quickly understand what happened in a video clip without watching it.

The HomeView interface intelligently adjusts based on the user’s distance, showing simpler information that’s viewable from across the room and richer detail as they step closer. It also offers customizable faces, including weather information, photos, and animated designs, enhancing its utility as a central command station for the smart home.

Apple announced the HomeView alongside other new products, including the HomePod mini 2, the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, and the Apple Home Collection, a suite of Matter-enabled cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, and thermostats built in partnership with LG and Schneider Electric. Pre-orders for the HomeView and other devices are now available on popular retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy, with general retail availability beginning November 13.

The HomeView features a 7-inch Liquid Retina display with a brightness range of 0.3 to 500 nits, and it supports True Tone technology. It can tell apart up to six people in a household and pulls up a tailored home screen for each person, surfacing their apps, widgets, and calendar appointments. The device also includes a built-in camera that can identify household members and pets, enhancing its functionality as a smart home hub.

AppleCare+ coverage for the HomeView is priced at $2.49 per month or $24.99 per year until canceled, or users can opt to add the device to the AppleCare One bundle, which starts at $19.99 per month. If the device is damaged, repair fees are $39 with AppleCare+ coverage and $279 without.

The HomeView’s promotional film, titled “Welcome Apple HomeView: Designed for life at home,” has drawn mixed reactions, with some noting the chaotic scenes depicted in the commercial as a departure from Apple’s usual polished advertising style.
