A senior U.S. official told the Associated Press on Sunday that President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are furious about Guilfoyle’s reported behavior and will likely decide what to do this week, after Monday’s Columbus Day holiday.

Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and California prosecutor, is facing allegations of improper conduct, including asking a Republican donor to wire $100,000 to pay off her American Express bill before her confirmation hearing.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle allegedly threatened a Greek official and accepted improper gifts and services, leading to calls for an investigation from top Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis told the Greek parliament Friday that calling Guilfoyle in to explain herself “would serve no purpose.”

Rubio is especially angry because he was visiting Athens last week while the allegations were coming out, and Guilfoyle greeted him with a bear hug and attended most, if not all, of his events.

Guilfoyle’s lawyer has disputed how the dinner was described, and the Greek energy minister who attended denies the allegations.

When asked if he was considering firing Guilfoyle, Trump said, “We’re looking at it. We’re not happy.”

The decision on Guilfoyle’s future is expected shortly following the Columbus Day holiday.

In a statement, a government spokesperson said there was “never any question” of the Greek government being threatened.

Guilfoyle’s lawyers also rejected allegations of impropriety related to her travel on private planes, saying she “sought, obtained and followed State Department guidance and followed the Department’s travel regulations” before every such trip.

What this adds

The extent of Guilfoyle's misconduct and the exact nature of her interactions with Greek officials remain unclear.
