President Trump announced a deal to buy Russian diesel fuel, aiming to lower prices for Americans and globally. The agreement, reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin, involves Russia supplying over 4.8 million tons of diesel fuel to the U.S. and global markets.

The deal includes immediate supply of more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tons in November, and 1 million tons thereafter. Trump claimed the deal would bring diesel prices down to record lows.

Critics argue the deal could undermine U.S. sanctions on Russia and raise questions about Trump's relationship with Putin. The Atlantic noted that the deal is further proof of the accusation that Nancy Pelosi made in 2019: 'With you, all roads lead to Putin.'

The deal also promises corruption opportunities on a multibillion-dollar scale for Trump's entourage, according to The Atlantic. The report highlighted that Dmitriev found receptive partners in Witkoff, Trump’s longtime golfing partner, and Jared Kushner, whose investment fund drew billion-dollar investments from Arab monarchies.

The Kremlin's strategy, hatched before Trump's inauguration, aimed to bypass the traditional U.S. national security apparatus and convince the administration to view Russia as a land of bountiful opportunity. By dangling multibillion-dollar rare-earth and energy deals, Moscow could reshape the economic map of Europe and drive a wedge between America and its traditional allies.

Trump's special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are traveling to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend with a proposal to 'end the war.' Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy criticized the deal, stating that Russia thanked the U.S. for lifting sanctions on diesel exports by bombing residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia.

In a separate development, Norway seized a Russian vessel in Svalbard to enforce a $4.22 billion award, and NATO deployed Turkish fighter aircraft after Ukrainian drones entered Estonian airspace.

The deal's announcement comes amid soaring energy prices and ahead of the November midterm elections, making it a political liability for the Republican Party.

Trump emphasized that the deal is a 'great announcement' for diesel prices, which have remained high despite increased oil flow from the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite renewables supplying 44 percent of EU electricity, the bloc still imports around 55 percent of its total energy, including oil and gas, highlighting the ongoing reliance on fossil fuels.

You can see how [Putin] would enjoy all this press about how people in his circle are cozying up to people in the president's circle. According to the ProPublica article, the couple got married on a private island in the Bahamas, then held a two-day celebration on a separate island that rents for approximately $100,000 per night.
