Peruvian businessman Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has been elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in the Andes, according to reports from BBC (United Kingdom) and Straitstimes (Singapore). The election took place on October 4, with Flores securing around 34% of the vote.

BBC (United Kingdom) reported that Flores won 229 votes out of a total of 663 votes cast, while Straitstimes (Singapore) noted that he defeated his closest rival from the right-wing Renovación Popular Perú by 25 votes.

Flores, who works in the freight transportation business, previously belonged to Popular Force, the party of Peru’s right-wing President Keiko Fujimori, until 2025, according to electoral authorities cited by Straitstimes (Singapore).

The election of Flores has garnered international attention due to his unusual name, which includes the names of two notorious European dictators, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Local media noted that Flores campaigned on the slogan 'I'm the good Hitler,' as reported by BBC (United Kingdom) and Straitstimes (Singapore).

Flores was born in Queropalca, in the central Peruvian department of Huánuco, about 360 kilometers from the capital, Lima, according to his candidate profile as reported by Tvcnews.

The small electorate of Queropalca, with just over 730 people, has attracted significant attention due to the unusual nature of the candidate’s name. Flores will take office on January 1, 2024.

Flores’ victory is not the first time a Peruvian politician with a similar name has won an election. In 2018, Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez was elected mayor of Yúngar, and in 2021, Hitler Saavedra Casternoque was elected to Parliament for the centrist party Somos Peru, as reported by Straitstimes (Singapore) and The Guardian.

Despite the curiosity generated by his name, Flores’ victory highlights the unique political landscape in Peru, where such names are not uncommon. According to civil-registry figures reported by La República, at least 3,943 Peruvians were named Hitler in 2023.

Flores’ campaign slogan and his unusual name have drawn significant media attention, with local media noting that his candidacy is a 'striking event,' as reported by Peru21.

Flores’ victory in Queropalca is part of a broader trend in Peru where politicians with unusual names have won elections, despite the historical connotations associated with those names.

Both BBC (United Kingdom) and Straitstimes (Singapore) agree that Flores won the election with a narrow margin, securing around 34% of the vote in a small electorate of just over 700 people.

The international attention garnered by Flores’ victory underscores the unique political and cultural dynamics in Peru, where historical names have not necessarily deterred voters.
