At New York Comic Con, Blumhouse released the first trailer for 'The Exorcist: Martyrs,' which premieres March 12, 2027. The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Detective Julie Miller, who investigates a series of gruesome murders that lead her into a supernatural mystery.
In the trailer, Detective Julie Miller ends the killing spree of satanic Father Sunday, only to be dragged back into darkness 13 years later when her name is written in blood on the walls of a church crypt.
Flanagan, known for his work on 'The Haunting of Hill House' and 'Doctor Sleep,' wrote and directed the film, which is based on characters created by William Peter Blatty, the author of the original 'The Exorcist.'
The cast includes Diane Lane, Jacobi Jupe, Scoot McNairy, Gil Bellows, and Laurence Fishburne, alongside Johansson.
Flanagan cited 'Se7en,' 'The Silence of the Lambs,' and William Friedkin’s 'The Exorcist' as inspirations for the genre blend of 'The Exorcist: Martyrs.'
The trailer, rated by Consumer Protection BC, runs for 2 minutes and 27 seconds, featuring flashes of Johansson finding bodies, discussions about past possessed killers, and scenes of death penalty protests.
Flanagan emphasized that 'The Exorcist: Martyrs' is a radical new take on the franchise, aiming to use familiar elements to create something new.
The film marks Flanagan's return to franchise storytelling after his work on 'Doctor Sleep' in 2019.
The Exorcist franchise had previously struggled with 'The Exorcist: Believer,' which made $137 million globally amid poor reviews.
Flanagan's 'The Exorcist: Martyrs' is produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan's Red Room Pictures.
The film is set to explore crime thriller elements within the established horror setting of the Exorcist universe, diverging from the previous reboot 'The Exorcist: Believer.'
