ICE Agent Shoots Man in New York City During Immigration Raid
Confirmed
In Short: While the exact circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation, both Al Jazeera (Qatar) and the BBC (United Kingdom) agree that an ICE agent shot a man during a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx, leading to widespread protests and calls for accountability.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in New York City on Thursday during a targeted enforcement operation, according to reports from Al Jazeera (Qatar) and the BBC (United Kingdom). The incident occurred in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx around 4 p.m. local time.
Al Jazeera (Qatar) reported that the man shot was a 28-year-old Dominican national with a criminal conviction, identified as Oscar Belgal by city police. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, stated that its officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation to arrest this individual.
The BBC (United Kingdom) corroborated the timing and location of the shooting but did not provide the suspect's name or criminal history. Both outlets agreed that ICE agents were attempting to make an arrest when the shooting occurred.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City said early reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old in his car before firing multiple rounds. Mamdani expressed concern over the incident, stating, “Today’s shooting is only further devastating confirmation of what we have long known, which is that ICE operates with impunity, that they sow chaos and terror across our country, that they have killed far more of our neighbours than they could ever have claimed to save.”
City Council member Carmen De La Rosa, who represents the area, echoed Mamdani's sentiments, saying, “We are heartbroken and enraged.” Mamdani also urged President Donald Trump to end all ICE enforcement actions in the city, adding, “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities.”
The DHS added that the incident remains under investigation. Mayor Mamdani called for the release of any body camera footage of the shooting to establish the facts and get to the truth. He also expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged ICE to halt enforcement operations in New York.
Protests followed the shooting, with demonstrators saying the incident illustrated the dangers of Trump’s immigration crackdown. Some scuffles with police broke out during the protests.
According to the New York Police Department, which said it was not involved in the shooting, the man is conscious and receiving medical attention. The NYPD confirmed they were not on scene at the time of the shooting.
The shooting has reignited debates about ICE's tactics and the broader immigration policies of the Trump administration. Mayor Mamdani's call for an end to ICE operations in New York highlights the growing tension between local authorities and federal immigration enforcement.
