Paramount Developing 'Cyberpunk 2077' Movie
Confirmed
In Short: Paramount Pictures and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura have begun developing a live-action film based on the popular video game 'Cyberpunk 2077,' according to Deadline.

The game, developed by CD Projekt Red, follows a mercenary named V who is on a quest to collect a biochip known as 'The Relic,' which leads to the implantation of a chip containing the consciousness of a rockstar terrorist named Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves in the game.
Despite initial launch issues, 'Cyberpunk 2077' has become a major success, selling over 40 million copies worldwide, and its 'Phantom Liberty' expansion has sold more than 15 million copies.
The film will be set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, though specific story details have not been announced. CD Projekt Red’s involvement as a co-producer suggests the developer wants to maintain creative control over its world.
The development of the film is part of a broader trend in Hollywood, where video games are increasingly being adapted into successful films and television series. This includes 'Call of Duty,' 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4,' and 'The Last of Us,' which has been adapted into a critically acclaimed HBO series.
In a statement, CD Projekt Red expressed excitement about partnering with Paramount, stating, “We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.”
The film is expected to be part of an eight-year development process, with Paramount pledging to release 30 films annually for at least five years as part of an agreement to secure the deal.
What this adds
The animated series 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' on Netflix has also inspired a sequel series expected later this month.
It remains unclear whether the movie will retell the story of the game or introduce entirely new characters in the same setting.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt. Based on Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk tabletop game series, the plot is set in the fictional cyberpunk metropolis of Night City in California, within the dystopian Cyberpunk universe.
