Math Group Urges Mathematicians to Reject OpenAI Over AI-Generated Research
Developing
In Short: OpenAI defended its actions, stating that the AGMAI is helping it develop best practices for releasing AI-generated mathematical research.

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) criticized OpenAI for releasing 722 manuscripts spanning 372 groups of results, saying mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done.
In a statement, AHM urged mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.
AHM accused OpenAI of disregarding the norms of scientific research by releasing multitudes of manuscripts without proper independent verification and credit to researchers.
The association highlighted that mathematicians have a specific vision of progress informed by history and field-specific considerations.
AHM noted that the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI), which OpenAI consulted, advised against testing advanced mathematical problems on internal models.
OpenAI defended its actions, stating that the AGMAI is helping it develop best practices for releasing AI-generated mathematical research.
Two days after OpenAI released a broad range of mathematical results, AHM slammed the AI startup, raising questions about transparency and prioritization of speed over verification.
Background
Eminent mathematicians have formed the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) to advise OpenAI on its use of AI in solving major math problems.
What's still developing
- “Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done” AHM said in the statement that began by invoking the accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution that have been made against OpenAI.
- The ChatGPT-maker also disclosed that to improve how it shares the results with the broader math community, it has been consulting an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) at the Institute for Advanced Study.
- AHM said that by overlooking the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated ‘total disregard for the norms of scientific research ‘.
- This was following the criticism it received from the math community after it claimed to crack the Navier-Stokes problem, which is one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems.
- OpenAI published the results in a GitHub repository with protocols for paper revisions and citations.
- AHM said that releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship but a demonstration of power.
