HBO Orders 'Crazy Rich Asians' Series with Original Cast
Confirmed
In Short: The series will continue the story of Rachel (Wu) and Nick (Golding) as they navigate the complexities of their relationship and the Crazy Rich Asian world.

HBO has announced the development of a new series based on Kevin Kwan's 'Crazy Rich Asians,' with Adele Lim serving as showrunner and executive producer.
The series will feature the return of Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng, who starred in the 2018 film.
Michelle Yeoh will also reprise her role as a recurring guest star.
The series will consist of eight episodes, delving deeper into the characters and worlds of Kwan's novels.
Lim stated, 'This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books.'
The original film's co-writer, Adele Lim, declined an offer to participate in a sequel to the original movie when she was reportedly offered only an eighth of the salary her co-writer was.
Despite the challenges of adapting the source material after the film made key changes to the main characters, the series is moving forward.
Casey Bloys, Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer at Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, said, 'We are so excited that Adele and the team behind the history-making film are bringing the next chapter of this story to life.'
Jacobson and Simpson added, 'We couldn’t be happier to bring this extraordinary gang back together for a series that picks up where the movie left off.'
The series will explore the wealthy families, complicated relationships, and extravagant lifestyles of Kwan's bestselling novels.
No release window has been set for the series to make its debut on HBO.
Fans have long been hoping for a follow-up film or series that would continue the story, as Kwan has plenty of novels to choose from.

What's confirmed
- The film’s co-writer Adele Lim will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series, which is a nice bit of karmic justice: Lim declined to participate in a sequel to the original movie when she was reportedly offered only an eighth of the salary her co-writer was.

What's still developing
- Crazy Rich Asians was one of the biggest films of 2018, nabbing award after award from prestigious events, including two Golden Globe nominations.
- No casting announcements have come yet either, so it’s unclear whether names like Constance Wu or Henry Golding will reprise their roles in whatever HBO has up their sleeves.
- The romantic comedy follows Chinese-American Rachel (Wu) and her fiancé, Nick (Golding), as they visit the latter’s family all the way around the globe in Singapore.
- However, it sounds like (for now at least) that the series will be a remake of the story first put on screen in Chu’s film.
- It was also reported that — despite the series coming in hot with development already underway — the feature-length sequel is still in the works, so it’s really anyone’s guess as to how the show will play out.
- Chan and Shum’s deals could still be in motion, or the roles will be recast, or the series will instead focus on the next chapter for the recently engaged Rachel (Wu) and Nick (Golding).
- Wu revealed that while a show is in the works, with Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim attached as showrunner, that doesn’t mean it’ll be hitting our screens anytime soon.
