France TV Distribution is launching the mystery thriller 'The Island of Lies' ('Sans Retour') at this year's Mipcom TV market in Cannes. The series, produced by Fontaram Productions and Ramona Productions for France Télévisions, centers on Emma, a 33-year-old woman fighting to clear her name after being wrongfully convicted of a double murder.

Co-writer Pascal Fontanille said the show is inspired by a rare judicial situation where a sentence is temporarily suspended while a decision on a retrial is pending. Since 1945, fewer than 1% of convictions in France have been overturned, highlighting the reluctance of the justice system to question itself.

Set on the remote island of Kerlann off the coast of Brittany, the six-part series explores the tension and suspicion that arise in a tight-knit community. Emma must return to the island, where everyone rejects her, including her son who believes she murdered his father.

The island setting, Fontanille explained, serves both aesthetic and dramatic purposes. The beauty of the sea contrasts with the insular community's hostility, intensifying the drama and heightening the tension as Emma races against time.

Julia Schulte, senior vice president of international sales at France TV Distribution, praised the series for its dynamic plot and strong female lead, describing it as a compelling whodunit that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats until the final episode.

Elisa Erka, who plays Emma, brings a strength and fury to the role that underscores the character's wounds and vulnerability, portraying a rebellious and combative heroine fighting for her freedom and truth.
