Sebastian Stan, who has been a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since his debut as Bucky Barnes in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, has teased that the highly anticipated 'Avengers: Doomsday' is likely to be a heartbreaking film.
In a recent interview with Decider, Stan admitted, 'I haven’t seen the movie, and I don’t know how it turned out.' He further elaborated, 'I’m sure it’s going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways. We’ll see who makes it to the next level.'
Stan’s comments echo those of Alan Cumming, who will reprise his role as Nightcrawler in 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Cumming told SiriusXM, 'To be honest, I don’t fully understand the plot.' He added that most of his scenes were shot in front of a blue screen.
Stan’s uncertainty stems from the unique filming process used by the Russo brothers, who directed 'Avengers: Endgame' and are helming 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Joe Russo told AP, 'We’re improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them.'
The film, set to release exclusively in theaters on December 18, 2026, will see beloved heroes from three distinct universes face an existential threat. Stan revealed that he filmed 'scattered scenes' for 'Doomsday' without a script, adding to the mystery surrounding the film.
Stan’s comments also reflect the MCU’s tradition of keeping plot details under wraps. In 'Endgame,' the cast was told they were filming a wedding scene, only to discover it was Tony Stark’s funeral, a tactic used to prevent leaks.
The next level Stan refers to is 'Avengers: Secret Wars,' which is set to release on December 17, 2027. Stan expressed nostalgia about reuniting with the original cast on the 'Doomsday' set, including Chris Evans.
Stan’s latest film, 'Fjord,' hits theaters, and he admits he hasn’t even watched the finished 'Avengers: Doomsday' film yet. His comments about 'Doomsday' should be taken with a grain of salt, as he has not seen the final product.
Despite the uncertainty, Stan’s comments suggest that 'Avengers: Doomsday' will be a significant and emotional event for MCU fans.
What this adds
Stan's comments about the film being heartbreaking and not everyone making it to the next level align with the secretive and improvisational nature of the film's production.
What's confirmed
- “I haven’t seen the movie, and I don’t know how it turned out,” Stan told Decider in a new interview.
- “It was very nostalgic to look back, and think about all of these years that we’ve known each other, and grew up together,” Stan said.
What's still developing
- He’s worn many hats since then, including Hydra assassin, reformed bad guy, an Avenger, and, most recently, a congressman (if you’re confused by that last role, you should probably watch Thunderbolts* before Doomsday ).
- It sounds like Marvel followed a similar playbook for Doomsday.
- Sebastian Stan is one of those actors, and he's coming back for another round of that following his appearance in Thunderbolts* last year, a movie that ruled and not enough of you went to see, which is a crime.
- Stan is essentially the Marvel MVP at this point and might be filling that role they initially wanted for Nick Fury better than Nick Fury, so he knows all of the tricks of the trade.
- People are starting to drop more hints about Avengers: Doomsday now that we're heading into the final three months before the release date, but considering what we have heard about this production, it sounds like people won't have much to spoil because so much of this film was handed to actors in out-of-context chunks.
- Up next for Sebastian Stan is that he is currently starring in Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, which recently paused filming.
- “We always view the script as a living organism,” Joe told the Associated Press last month.
