ParaNorman, a kid-friendly animated horror comedy, is set to return to theaters just before Halloween, according to Entertainment Weekly. The film will hit North American theaters on Oct. 25 and international theaters on Oct. 23.
The special release of ParaNorman is part of a trend where family-friendly horror films are being re-released to capitalize on the Halloween season. Last year, Laika, the animation studio behind ParaNorman, saw success with the re-release of their earlier project Coraline.
Meanwhile, Other Mommy, a horror film starring Jessica Chastain, is set to debut in theaters on Oct. 13, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film follows an 8-year-old girl who faces an entity from her closet.
Other Mommy is rated R for some bloody violence and language, and is being screened at Becky’s Drive-In, the only independent theater in and around the Lehigh Valley listing the film.
The Hollywood Reporter also notes that Other Mommy kicks off a month of horror films, with several other titles set to release, including a re-release of Ken Russell’s controversial 1971 cult classic.
The re-release of Ken Russell’s film will be in theaters for one week only, with a 4K restoration.
In addition to ParaNorman and Other Mommy, The Hollywood Reporter lists several other horror films set to release this month, including The Whale, The Nun, and The Witching Hour.
The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky, follows a man who seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that returns him to his former self but also affects his grip on reality.
The Witching Hour, directed by Rob Savage, follows an 8-year-old girl who faces an entity from her closet.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that the first reactions to Other Mommy say the movie is intense and claustrophobic, with another strong performance by Abrams.
