Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir praised Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which ended on Tuesday.
Gambhir took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his admiration, writing, 'Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are a testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always... I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. My heartfelt wishes for your future endeavours!!'
Agarkar's term officially concluded after he took the reins in July 2023. A source told The Indian Express that Agarkar did not request an extension and that the BCCI has now called for applications for a new chief selector.
During his tenure, Agarkar oversaw India's success in reaching the final of the ODI World Cup, winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, and securing the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin also expressed empathy for Agarkar's situation on his YouTube channel, reflecting the mixed reactions to Agarkar's leadership.
The Indian Express reported in August that BCCI officials had planned to meet Agarkar to discuss a one-year extension to his term, but these plans did not materialize due to differences over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
