Archbishop Broglio Urges Peace at Red Mass
Developing
In Short: Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, urged lawmakers and legal professionals to seek peace and harmony during the 74th annual Red Mass.

Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, delivered the homily at the 74th annual Red Mass on October 4 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C. The event, which marks the beginning of the judicial year, was attended by nearly 1,000 people, including Vice President JD Vance and Chief Justice John G. Roberts.
Broglio emphasized the importance of invoking God’s blessings on those responsible for the administration of justice and public officials. He highlighted the tradition of the Red Mass, which dates back centuries and is held in Rome, Paris, and London.
The Archbishop encouraged attendees to direct their thoughts towards peace and harmony, suggesting that a more civil society could be achieved if more people embraced these values. He noted, “If more of us directed our thoughts in the ways of peace, we would discover and develop a more civil society and learn to live in harmony with our neighbors.”
Broglio also reminded the congregation of the link between love and respect for the commandments, stating, “the Lord makes it clear that there is a link between love and respect for the commandments.” He added, “Keeping the Lord’s word also means that the Triune God dwells with us and we draw on His presence to move forward.”
The Archbishop urged the legal community to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and to entrust their cares to a loving God. He said, “How appropriate that we gather at the traditional beginning of the judicial year to beg divine blessings on our human endeavors by invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit and entrusting our cares to a loving God who brings consolation to us.”
Broglio emphasized the importance of caritas, or charity, in the legal profession and society at large. He stated, “Caritas certainly has a place in the law school just as it has a place in every angle of society.” He also noted that the Red Mass is sponsored by the John Carroll Society, which is marking its 75th year since its founding in 1951.
Concelebrants at the Mass included Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, and Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, the bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh.
The Red Mass is a tradition that aims to invoke God’s blessings on those responsible for the administration of justice and public officials. It is a time for reflection and prayer, with the Archbishop urging attendees to seek the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit to guide their endeavors and bring them to the fullness of their potential.
