The New York Yankees struggled defensively in their 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday, committing four errors, including three in the first inning.

Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and third baseman Ryan McMahon both made critical errors early in the game, contributing to the Yankees' defensive breakdown.

Chisholm, in particular, admitted to a lapse in judgment, saying, "I feel like we beat ourselves today in a lot of ways." Manager Aaron Boone echoed this sentiment, noting, "We've just got to lock it in and go do our thing. Come together."

The Yankees' pitching also faltered, with reliever Cam Schlittler lamenting his performance, stating, "I just didn't have my stuff today." Despite his struggles, Boone defended Schlittler's throw, saying, "Probably best if you're under control and you make the throw, though it's probably going to be bang-bang."

The Yankees' bullpen, which had been a concern all season, continued to struggle, with relievers surrendering 14 earned runs in 17 innings over the week's series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Rays capitalized on the Yankees' defensive miscues, scoring four runs in the fifth inning, and ultimately securing a 5-2 victory.

With the loss, the Yankees now face elimination in Game 3 on Wednesday, down 2-0 in the series.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the team's defensive lapses, saying, "We didn't give him a good enough chance to do his job." Chisholm added, "We just didn't make some plays we usually make. Kind of happened throughout the game and, yeah, just made it harder for ourselves."

What this adds

The Yankees' defensive struggles in Game 2 were reminiscent of their collapse in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.

The Rays' victory in Game 2 solidifies their position as favorites in the series, with historical data showing that teams winning Game 1 have gone on to win the series 73% of the time since 1995.
