Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are teaming up once again to bring their origin story to life in a new scripted series titled '215'. The series will delve into their journey from West Philadelphia to becoming international hip-hop stars.
Their second album, 'He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper', released in 1988, was a massive success, certified triple platinum. This was a pivotal moment in their career, thanks to hits like 'Parents Just Don't Understand' and 'A Nightmare on My Street'.
Despite Smith's transition into movie stardom and the subsequent release of his own hit records, the pair maintained their friendship. They have reunited periodically, most recently for a performance at the Grammys' 'Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop' in 2023.
The series will explore the challenges and triumphs of their early years, including label meetings and the bonds that held them together as they navigated the burgeoning hip-hop scene.
What's still developing
- Apparently there’s a whole lot more to the “Fresh Prince” Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff ‘s origin story than maxin’, relaxin’ all cool, and shootin’ some B-ball outside of the school.
- “It follows a quick-witted teenage rapper, the DJ who is his musical other half, and the friends who helped fuel the dream,” the official synopsis says.
- Their second album, 1988’s He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper, was certified triple platinum thanks to “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “A Nightmare on My Street.” The duo released three more hit albums, the last of which, Code Red, came out in 1993, long after Smith became a megastar thanks to the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which debuted in 1990.
