Pope Leo XIV has called for a week of reflection, beginning October 7, 2026, to evaluate the reception of the 2016 document 'Amoris Laetitia,' which sparked significant debate within the Church.

The meeting, which will run until October 14, 2026, will bring together 187 representatives from around the world to discuss the challenges faced by families in contemporary society.

Gabriella Gambino, undersecretary of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, emphasized the need for the meeting to consider the rapid cultural and social changes that make it increasingly difficult for families to live out and pass on their faith.

The gathering, marking the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia, is not a synod but an 'evaluation assembly,' according to Jesuit Father Giacomo Costa, who noted that the meeting's success will be measured by the processes it sets in motion within the Churches rather than by any synthesis document produced.

Father Costa clarified during a press conference that the meeting is an opportunity for bishops to reflect on the current situation of families and the challenges they face, stressing that 'without families, the Church cannot reinvigorate its Christian roots.'

What this adds

The Vatican has emphasized that the meeting is not an evaluation of Amoris Laetitia itself, but rather a reflection on the document's impact and the broader challenges faced by families in the modern world.

Background

According to Vatican officials, the meeting is not a synod or an evaluation of Amoris Laetitia, but rather an opportunity for bishops to reflect on the current situation of families and the challenges they face.

Amoris laetitia is a post-synodal apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis addressing the pastoral care of families. Dated 19 March 2016, it was released on 8 April 2016.
