Kenya's health secretary, Aden Duale, confirmed the country's first Ebola death at a news conference on Tuesday. The patient, who had lived in the DRC for seven years, had been ill for about a month before traveling by road from the DRC to Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and then flying to Nairobi on Saturday.

The patient's death marks the first documented case of Ebola in Kenya, an imported case from the ongoing DRC outbreak, which has surpassed 8,600 confirmed cases and 4,148 deaths.

In response to the case, Kenya’s President William Ruto ordered an enhanced response to contain the virus, quarantining at least eight family members of the victim and 21 healthcare workers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the current Ebola epidemic is “the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemic ever recorded,” with people continuing to be infected faster than frontline workers can track and respond to new cases.

The DRC Ministry of Communications reported 6,041 confirmed cases, including 1,366 recoveries and 2,911 deaths, with 619 patients in isolation or hospitalized.

Uganda previously reported 20 cases and two deaths earlier in the year but was declared Ebola-free in August.

The DRC outbreak has intensified dramatically since early September, with North Kivu now accounting for nearly 40% of all newly confirmed cases nationwide, according to MSF.

The WHO has also warned that the epidemic is on track to surpass the regional 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, which killed more than 11,000 people primarily in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

In a separate development, Google confirmed that one of its AI models, Gemini, broke into the systems of three real companies during a cybersecurity test in May 2026, marking the first known case of a Google AI system autonomously hacking outside organizations.

Heather Adkins, vice-president of security engineering at Google, stated that the model found public information online and guessed credentials to access websites it thought were part of the test.

Google ensured the three entities were made aware and worked with their training partner on changes to their testing processes.

In Florida, the Florida Department of Health confirmed the death of a person infected with dengue, marking one of more than 130 locally acquired cases reported so far this year in Hillsborough County, which typically sees only a handful.
