Capitals star Alex Ovechkin announced to his teammates this morning that this season will be his final in the NHL.

Ovechkin, 41, broke Wayne Gretzky’s career goal-scoring record in April 2025 and signed a one-year contract for $4.25 million with an additional $4.75 million performance bonus.

He said, “It’s sad, but it is what it is,” adding, “Let’s make the playoffs, let’s have fun and enjoy the moment because times fly.”

Ovechkin, drafted by the Capitals in 2004, has played 1575 games over 22 seasons, leading the team in goals for 21 consecutive seasons.

Last season, Ovechkin recorded his NHL-record 20th 30-goal season, finishing with 32 goals and 64 points.

The Capitals, who missed the playoffs last season despite Ovechkin's efforts, have made significant roster improvements this offseason.

Ovechkin, who won the Calder Trophy as top rookie in his first season, also holds the Richard and Hart trophies, the Pearson Award, and eight First-Team NHL All-Star selections.

The Capitals released a video of Ovechkin addressing his retirement plan with his teammates.

"I know in my heart it is the right decision," Ovechkin said.

"We have an unbelievable team this year," he added, emphasizing his hope for a successful season.
