NASA geologists have identified a moon-like rock formation in southern Madagascar, which may appear out of place from an astronaut's perspective looking back at Earth.

The formation, known as anorthosite, is a type of rock that is also found in other parts of the world, including eastern Canada, Scandinavia, and southern India.

According to NASA, this deformation occurred when pieces of what are now Africa, India, Madagascar, Australia, and Antarctica were colliding to form the supercontinent Gondwana.

In southern Madagascar, the anorthosite forms a striking round feature, standing out in the arid landscape.
