Colleen Hoover's novel 'Verity' has been adapted into a film that challenges the traditional mystery genre by leaving the central mystery unresolved.

The story follows Lowen, a struggling writer hired to complete the book series of renowned author Verity Crawford, who is left paralyzed and unable to communicate after an accident.

While staying at the Crawford home, Lowen discovers a chilling hidden manuscript: Verity's unfinished autobiography, which raises questions about Verity's true nature.

Hoover reveals that she did not initially plan the story's ambiguity, but the film adaptation has influenced her perspective on the novel's central mystery.

"When I wrote the book and ended it how I ended it, I was in Lowen’s perspective. It was first-person from Lowen, so I was just as confused as she was, and I’ve carried that with me until recently," Hoover tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The film's central challenge was to turn the pull of Verity's words into something visual, making the manuscript a central character in the story.

"The secrets that are revealed in this are going to be very unfamiliar to people," says the film's director, emphasizing the unique and unsettling nature of the story.

"It’s calling to you. It’s sort of beckoning you to come," the director adds, describing the allure of Verity's manuscript.

"Just one tiny moment can change everything," another quote from the film highlights the unpredictable nature of the plot.

"As a piece of entertainment, it’s sort of got everything. It’s sexy. It’s scary. It’s visually compelling. It’s got these amazing characters. It’s touching on some really interesting subject matter. I just was totally hooked," a fan of the film says.

"I had to read it again for the first time after watching the film, and I think the film influenced me. I’ve actually gained a whole new perspective, and I still don’t know," another fan reflects.
