Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II could miss multiple weeks due to an ankle injury he suffered during Sunday's 24-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport described the injury as 'kind of a weird one' because Surtain pulled up without contact and was favoring his right foot. The Broncos have ruled out an Achilles-related issue, and initial reports suggest his Achilles is 'intact,' as reported by The Ringer's Tom Pelissero.

Surtain's absence would be a significant blow to the Broncos' defense. Through the first four games, he had 21 tackles and one pass breakup, and opposing quarterbacks have largely avoided targeting him. He has been targeted just 14 times, allowing eight completions.

Compounding the situation, the Broncos also lost starting cornerback Riley Moss to a rib injury. Moss was ruled out early in the game and did not return. According to Rapoport, Denver believes Moss has avoided a broken rib, though tests will determine the full extent of his injury.

Linebacker Alex Singleton praised the efforts of Kris Abrams-Draine and Jahdae Barron, who took over for Surtain and Moss. 'Young guys stepped up huge,' Singleton said. 'Thankfully, they were both ready to play football.'

Barron, a 2025 first-round pick, could see increased playing time, providing him with an opportunity to showcase his skills in a larger role. However, there's bound to be a drop in performance compared to Surtain, who is a three-time All-Pro and the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2024.

The Broncos' defense struggled without their top cornerbacks, as Surtain and Moss are considered one of the top cornerback duos in the league. When Surtain is on the field, opposing quarterbacks tend to avoid targeting him, which means Moss is usually quite busy on the other side.

Rapoport noted that Moss got hit on one side but injured a rib on the other side. He will have tests today to see the damage. The Broncos will undergo further testing for Surtain's non-contact injury to his ankle.

What this adds

The extent of Surtain's injury remains unclear, and further testing will provide more information.
