In Short: AI safety groups are not convinced by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's recent shift in stance regarding political spending, according to a report by Politico.

Altman acknowledged to Politico that OpenAI President Greg Brockman had earlier this summer decided to withdraw additional funding from the Leading the Future super PAC, citing the group's efforts as a 'distraction' from the company's mission.

Despite Altman's acknowledgment, Democratic New York assemblymember Alex Bores, a key voice in AI regulation advocacy, stated, 'I won’t believe that they are actually changing their strategy, or their goals I should say, unless and until they do.'

AI safety groups are pushing for stronger commitments from OpenAI to reduce the flow of money into political campaigns and are urging candidates to reject support from pro-AI groups.

The groups are wary of Altman's concession that campaign cash from industry-aligned groups may have backfired, and are seeking concrete actions to address their concerns.
