The payments will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, established by Congress in 2008 to improve program operations and payments to healthcare providers.

Eligible Medicare Part B enrollees will receive the one-time payment in October, either through direct deposit or by check.

To qualify, seniors must be living in the U.S. and not already receiving premium assistance from Medicaid or paying adjusted monthly premiums based on income.

More than half of eligible Medicare beneficiaries have Medicare Advantage, according to healthcare research nonprofit KFF.

Previous administrations have not used the Medicare Improvement Fund in this way, although Congress has periodically taken out money from the fund to pay for other priorities.

The $90 payment amounts to less than half of the standard monthly Part B premium, which is $202.90 in 2026.

Seniors can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to check their eligibility and the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 for information about a payment’s status.

The Medicare Improvement Fund was established in 2008 for improvements to original Medicare’s fee-for-service program.

This is the latest in a series of promises ahead of the midterms.

The White House fact sheet clarified that the one-time payment will be $90 per person and will go to more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees.
