Sheryl Lee Ralph Aims for Abbott Elementary's Longevity

Confirmed

Entertainment Desk

In Short: Sheryl Lee Ralph, who plays the no-nonsense teacher Barbara Howard in 'Abbott Elementary,' has expressed her desire for the show to run as long as 'Grey’s Anatomy,' which has been on for 20 years.

Ralph, who won an Emmy for her role as Barbara Howard, told People, 'If Grey’s Anatomy could be on for 20 years, why can’t we?' She added, 'I love Barbara Howard so much. I’m not going to tell you I’m tired of her because I’m not tired of her. I want to take this journey with her.'

In Season 4, Barbara struggled to accept changes in her school traditions, such as when the students didn't want to bob for apples at the Halloween party, which had been a yearly tradition since Barbara began teaching at Abbott.

By the time the series began, Barbara was already a legend in the community, having taught for so long that Season 5 introduces a new teacher, Dominic Clark (Luke Tennie), who was once in Barbara's class.

During the golf course drama, Barbara reveals that she has a plan for when she's no longer working, wanting to move to Arizona for the dry climate.

Before Abbott Elementary received a Season 6 renewal in March, show creator and star Quinta Brunson noted that she’s 'looking forward to moving away' to other projects beyond the sitcom.

Brunson told Bustle last year, 'We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans.'

However, Brunson also acknowledged that some cast members would like to pursue other projects, as the show is very time-consuming, with shooting taking place about seven months out of the year.

Since debuting in 2021, Abbott Elementary has achieved commercial and critical acclaim, earning 37 Emmy nominations and winning four awards, including Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series in 2022.

Ralph became the second Black woman to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category after Jackée Harry, who won for 227 in 1987.

In her acceptance speech, Ralph celebrated by singing a verse from jazz singer Diane Reeves’ 1993 song 'Endangered Species.'

What this adds

Ralph's ambition for Abbott Elementary's longevity is ambitious, but the show's creators and cast members have varying interests in the future of the series.
