In a recent update, users of the language learning app Duolingo have expressed dissatisfaction with the app's current state, finding it a shadow of its former self.

Android Authority reported that Duolingo's lessons have become repetitive and redundant, with daily tasks feeling monotonous.

In preparation for a trip to Europe, a user decided to revisit Duolingo, only to find the app had significantly declined.

Android Police noted that Duolingo has been increasingly pushing its paid subscription tiers, with the Duolingo Max tier adding yet another paywall.

The app's shift towards becoming an 'AI-first company' has also been criticized, as it led to Duolingo ceasing to pay contract writers.

Users are now faced with ads in the free version, further diminishing the value of the free tier.

Duolingo's mascot, Duo the Owl, once a beloved connection to the community, seems to have been overshadowed by new features.

One such feature is a faux video call with a resident sarcastic teenager named Lily, which some users find off-putting.

Despite these changes, Duolingo has added many new features in recent years, most of which are locked behind paywalls.

Inews (United Kingdom) highlighted the possibility of boosting a child's social capital through activities like downloading Duolingo, but the app's current state may hinder this goal.
