Thornton's left foot bent awkwardly under Raiders safety Treydan Stukes as they both hit the turf after Thornton caught a 55-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Players from both teams knelt in prayer as Thornton left the field on a cart, ending a standout performance that included five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid expressed concern about the severity of Thornton's injury, saying, "It doesn't look good." He added, "He's gonna fly back with us and we'll get further evaluation later."

Reid also lamented the timing of the injury, noting, "For that to happen, especially with the year he's having. He's been having a phenomenal year to this point. And a great play to boot on top of that."

The injury occurred after Thornton had already made six catches for 108 yards in the game.

The Chiefs also lost receiver Rashee Rice to a hamstring injury earlier in the game.

Thornton, the 50th overall pick in the 2022 draft, spent his first three seasons with the New England Patriots before joining the Chiefs in 2025.

Through the first four weeks, Rice and Thornton had been Kansas City's best receivers, combining for 24 catches on 31 targets for 409 yards and three touchdowns.

Cameras initially showed the severity of Thornton's injury, but then immediately stopped showing any replays.

The Chiefs quickly ruled Thornton out for the remainder of their Week 4 game against the Raiders.

Thornton's left leg twisted awkwardly under Stukes as he was dragged to the ground, and it became apparent his left foot was facing the wrong direction.

Thornton initially didn't know that he had suffered an injury after making the catch.

What this adds

The severity of Thornton's injury is still being evaluated, and it is unclear how long he will be out of action.

The Chiefs' depth at receiver will be tested as they navigate the remainder of the season without Thornton and Rice.
