Visible Light Communication Underwater Shows Promise
Developing
In Short: Underwater visible light communication (UVLC) experiments suggest faster data transmission with lower costs.
Researchers at Nature have demonstrated that underwater visible light communication (UVLC) can transmit information through water with high speed, low cost, and large capacity.
The process involves encoding data into a digital signal and modulating it over an optical carrier of visible light.
One of the main challenges of UVLC is the power constraints of underwater terminals and signal distortions due to light attenuation in complex underwater environments.
Despite these challenges, experimental validations show that UVLC systems can achieve increased transmission efficiency with reduced algorithmic complexity.
What's still developing
- At the transmitter, data encoding is first required to convert the data to be transmitted into a digital signal and then modulate it over an optical carrier of visible light using certain modulation techniques.
