In Short: Parkdale Mills has taken full ownership of Ciclo, a technology designed to help synthetic fibers biodegrade.

Parkdale Mills announced on October 1 that its subsidiary, Parkdale Advanced Materials, has acquired full ownership of Ciclo, a patented textile ingredient that aids in the biodegradation of polyester and nylon in biologically active environments.

Davis Warlick, Parkdale’s chief operating officer, stated, “We are committed to investing in technologies that create value for our customers and address meaningful challenges for our industry and the environment.”

Ciclo technology can be used with various types of feedstocks, including virgin, recycled, biobased, and textile-to-textile materials, as well as natural-fiber blends.

According to Parkdale, Ciclo has been tested in various environments, including seawater, soil, wastewater sludge, and biologically active landfills. In one soil test, treated polyester fibers reached 91.1 percent biodegradation after 1,170 days.

Products incorporating Ciclo technology are already available from major brands and retailers such as Target, Walmart, Costco, Black Diamond, Stella McCartney, and Hanes.

Cheryl Smyre, vice president of Parkdale Advanced Materials, emphasized, “Our opportunity now is to take Ciclo technology further.”
