NASA Releases Complete Sharpless Catalog of 313 Nebulas
Developing
In Short: Today's image from NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) series showcases the complete Sharpless Catalog, which includes 313 nebulas.

The catalog features well-known nebulas such as the Eagle Nebula (Sh2-49), Heart Nebula (Sh2-190), and Orion Nebula (Sh2-281).
In addition to H II regions, the catalog also includes planetary nebulas like the Medusa Nebula (Sh2-274) and supernova remnants such as the Spaghetti Nebula (Sh2-240).
Each nebulas in the catalog required between 2 to 6 hours to capture, with the entire project taking approximately 800 hours.
Starting tomorrow, NASA's APOD will continue to feature new images, with the next picture set to be just Curiosity.
What this adds
The release of the complete Sharpless Catalog marks a significant achievement in astronomical imaging, showcasing the diversity and beauty of nebulas.
The catalog's availability on NASA's official website starting tomorrow will provide a valuable resource for astronomy enthusiasts and researchers.
Background
Starting tomorrow, NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day will be available at science.nasa.gov/apod.
What's still developing
- Explanation: What does it take to image hundreds of nebulas?
- Today’s image contains the entire Sharpless Catalog of H II Regions, totaling 313 objects.
- Despite its name, this catalog contains more than the glow of ionized hydrogen that makes up H II regions.
- Please see: APOD Submissions Tomorrow's picture: just Curiosity NASA explores the unknown in air and space, innovates for the benefit of humanity, and inspires the world through discovery.
