Delhi's Barapullah Flyover Chokes Commuters

Commuters in Delhi are facing significant traffic congestion on the newly launched Barapullah Phase III elevated corridor, with queues stretching several kilometers since its opening on Wednesday.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police and Public Works Department (PWD), the immediate reasons for the bottleneck are the sharp merger and the difference in road capacity.
The project was conceived at a time when traffic movement between East Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and South Delhi was different, officials said. However, in the intervening years, the number of vehicles and population in East Delhi and the wider National Capital Region (NCR) have increased, changing commuting patterns.
The corridor, designed to redistribute traffic from some of the city’s busiest routes like the DND Flyway and National Highway 24, is now attracting a substantial volume of vehicles from precisely those routes, adding pressure to the roads around the new flyover.
Phase III of the project brings a large volume of vehicles from the Mayur Vihar side towards the existing flyover, where the available road space reduces sharply. Traffic police have described the merger near Sundial as sharp and rectangular, exacerbating the bottleneck.
Since Wednesday, commuters have faced delays much longer than the journey times advertised before the flyover’s launch, with some delays stretching beyond the advertised travel times.
