Pope Leo XIV honored Karin Öberg, a Harvard scientist specializing in astrochemistry, with the Pius XI Medal during a recent audience with members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Öberg holds the Thomas Dudley Cabot Chair in the Natural Sciences at Harvard University and directs the Öberg Astrochemistry Laboratory at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Öberg’s recognition comes at a time when the pontiff has emphasized the compatibility of scientific progress and faith. During his recent general audience, Pope Leo XIV highlighted that advancements in science and technology are not in conflict with faith in God, aligning with Öberg’s own views on the relationship between science and religion.

Öberg, who has spoken publicly about her conversion to Catholicism, explained that her journey to faith was not immediate. 'What took time was the aspect of charity — living out the faith and truly building a relationship with God,' she said. She believes that science and faith need not be presented as opposing paths.

The Pius XI Medal, established in 1931, recognizes scientists under the age of 45 who have distinguished themselves through their research and show 'exceptional promise' in their field. Öberg’s work in astrochemistry, which explores the chemical processes in space, has been recognized for its significant contributions to understanding the origins of life.

Beyond her scientific achievements, Öberg has also expressed a special affinity for the Dominican tradition and for St. Thomas Aquinas, citing him as a particularly important figure for the way he united faith and reason. 'I try to be open and then invite people to come and talk to me, rather than preaching to them,' she noted.

What this adds
