Texas 34th District Race Heats Up as Gonzalez and Flores Battle for Seat
Developing
In Short: Before entering politics, Gonzalez was an attorney in private practice. The race is closely watched by election forecasters, who have rated the district either Toss-up or Lean Democratic.

Incumbent Vicente Gonzalez Jr. (D) and challenger Eric Flores (R) are locked in a tight race for Texas' 34th Congressional District seat, with the election set for Nov. 3. Eddie Espinoza (G) and Chris Royal (L) are also running but are not expected to significantly impact the outcome.
According to Courier Texas reporter ShaVonne Herndon, the perceived effects of former President Donald Trump's policies and affordability issues could sway voters in this toss-up election.
During mid-decade redistricting, the district was redrawn to favor Trump, who would have won in 2024 with 54.7% of the vote compared to 51.8% under the old lines. This shift could benefit Flores, who has Trump's endorsement.
Gonzalez, who has represented the district since 2023, argues that Trump's immigration and economic policies harm constituents and exacerbate affordability issues. He previously represented Texas' 15th Congressional District from 2017 to 2023.

What's still developing
- House districts up for election in 2026 that Trump won in the 2024 presidential election.
- Herndon says, "Texas 34 is one of the closest House races in the country and one of the clearest places to watch whether the politics of loyalty can outrun the economics of affordability." Gonzalez has represented the district since 2023.
