Google Adds Message Notifications to Pixel 11 Pro's HiLight LED
Developing
In Short: Google has introduced a new feature for the HiLight LED on the Pixel 11 Pro, allowing it to glow when receiving messages from favorite contacts. This update, part of the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6.1, enables users to customize the LED's behavior for individual contacts.

The HiLight LED, marketed as a standout feature of the Pixel 11 Pro, now offers more utility beyond its initial purpose of signaling calls and Gemini AI activity. Users can now find the new messages option under the 'Manage Experiences' section in Settings > System > HiLight.
The update also allows for manual control over the HiLight LED for calls and messages on a per-contact basis. Users can enable or disable the feature by navigating to the contact page.
Despite these enhancements, Google has not introduced new colors for the HiLight LED with this update. The company is working to make the feature more useful for Pixel users, but some feel the pace of new feature rollouts needs to accelerate.
The Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6.1 update is now available for the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, allowing users to test the new HiLight options.
Android Authority notes that the delay in adding message support and new colors might lead users to view HiLight as a novelty rather than a practical feature.
What this adds
Google's update to the HiLight LED addresses user feedback and enhances the feature's utility, but the lack of new colors may disappoint some users.
Background
Google has launched an early experiment with its Gemini Intelligence feature on the Pixel 11, allowing users to delegate routine business calls to the AI assistant.
The OnePlus 16 features a new 'Interstellar Lighting Effect' similar to the Pixel 11 Pro's HiLight LED.
What's still developing
- It glows when you get a call or when Gemini is working in the background, but unfortunately, it seems to weaken the Pixel’s flash.
- This isn’t entirely surprising, as we spotted evidence pointing toward message integration alongside new HiLight colors yesterday.
