B’nai Sholom Congregation: A Century of Jewish Life in the Tri-Cities
Confirmed
In Short: The initiative aims to help Christian congregations collaborate with charitable organizations to improve quality of life in their communities.

Lilly Endowment has launched the Serving Neighbors Through Congregational Collaborations Initiative, offering grants of up to $5 million each to support collaborations between Christian congregations and charitable organizations.
The initiative's goals are to help congregations expand their ministries beyond their sanctuaries and to address local needs and priorities, as stated by Christopher L. Coble, a spokesperson for the Endowment.
The Serving Neighbors initiative builds on the Endowment’s existing efforts to support projects that improve the quality of life in local communities and to strengthen the vitality of Christian congregations.
In a separate incident, a police officer stationed outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville on Sept. 20, during Yom Kippur, returned fire after being shot by a suspect, who was left with life-threatening injuries.
Although multiple shots hit the synagogue’s windows, no congregation members were injured, and the suspect was unable to enter the building.
Toronto Police Services increased its presence across the city during the Jewish High Holidays, from Sept. 11 to 13 for Rosh Hashanah and Sept. 20 and 21 for Yom Kippur, to ensure the safety of the Jewish community.
The Catholic Church also expressed solidarity with the Jewish community following the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, emphasizing the importance of safety and peace for all worshippers.

What's still developing
- “Our hope is that congregations and community organizations will forge creative and mutually beneficial collaborations that strengthen both the reach and impact of their efforts to serve individuals and families in their local communities,” Coble added.
- “We stand in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters following the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Our prayers are with the Jewish community, especially those directly affected by this act of violence. All people must be free to worship in safety and peace,” he said.
- Smith returned fire, leaving Ward, of Quinte West, with life-threatening injuries.
- The surveys keep pointing to the same ordinary wounds—hypocrisy that hangs in the air after potluck, marriages that collapse under the pressure to look perfect, congregations where no one learns your name, local fights that make the second coming feel like background noise.
