Maaden, Saudi Arabia’s national mining company, has shown interest in the project, leading to a follow-on 30-month research and development contract.

KAUST’s mission is to maximize the real-world impact of its scientific output by connecting innovations with industry needs and supporting research and development in areas of national priority.

The project exemplifies KAUST’s commitment to addressing challenges of strategic importance to the Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, has threatened to sue the United Kingdom over the Sea Lion oil project near the Falkland Islands, a territory claimed by Buenos Aires but administered by London.

Milei warned that if the United Kingdom does not halt the illegitimate exploitation within two weeks, Argentina will go to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

The move comes amid the long-running dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago.
