NASA highlights lessons learned from Swift boost mission
Confirmed
In Short: The Swift mission, while coming to a close, provided significant scientific data and valuable lessons in spacecraft management and rescue operations.

NASA's attempt to boost the orbit of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory concluded without success, but provided valuable lessons.
The Swift telescope, launched in 2004, was designed to study gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the cosmos.
NASA contracted Katalyst, a company based in Flagstaff, Arizona, to attempt the mission in September 2025. Katalyst had about one year to design, build, test, and launch a satellite to meet, grab, and lift Swift.
The mission required new forms of agile project management for NASA, as teams raced to get the LINK ready on the ground while Swift's Mission Operations Center at Penn State tried to keep the observatory above critical altitude.
During normal operations, the Penn State team sends a plan to Swift each day detailing which cosmic objects and events to observe.
A period of increased solar activity magnified the effect on Swift, accelerating its descent.
Despite efforts to keep Swift operational, the rescue attempt was called off on August 19 after the satellite tumbled out of control.
While the boost mission did not succeed, NASA and Katalyst gained valuable experience that will benefit future in-space servicing programs.
In other news, Taylor Swift made history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, receiving the first-ever Artist Director Honors and becoming the most-awarded artist ever with 33 VMAs.
Swift's directing work has become an integral part of her artistic identity, with videos like 'Cardigan,' 'Willow,' and 'Anti-Hero' showcasing her visual storytelling skills.
What this adds
The Swift mission's failure highlights the challenges of in-space servicing and the importance of lessons learned.
Taylor Swift's recognition at the VMAs underscores her growing influence beyond music, into visual storytelling and directing.
What's confirmed
- In a pre-taped sketch, Taylor Swift played a rookie in the “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” office as the cops got a bit looney.
- Hargitay’s Olivia Benson went through two large crime boards to make connections between Swift’s songs and Emmy nominations to see if she’d attend the telecast.
- Hargitay concludes: “Taylor Swift will not be at the Emmys.” Swift offers another option: “Maybe she’ll do one those cool, pre-taped sketch things to support the host.” The sketch ends with Hargitay posing with Swift — both glaring into the camera, very seriously — bookmarking Swift’s cat, named in tribute of Olivia Benson.
What's still developing
- “From the beginning, this was a high-risk, high-reward mission,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
- After deciding to investigate the potential for a boost attempt, NASA had only a few months to issue a call for proposals through its Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation and fund design concept studies through the agency’s Small Business Innovation Research program.
- And while we’ll be sad to see Swift’s mission come to a close, we knew this boost effort would be valuable to the agency on multiple levels — advancing U.S.
- The ceremony is also honoring the anniversaries of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Charlie’s Angels.” Here are some highlights as the show roars into the night.
- In reality, Swift was at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night, and sitting alongside Tom Cruise, to watch new husband Travis Kelce and his Kansas City Chiefs open the NFL season against the Denver Broncos.
- In other words, Swift is being recognized not just for starring in music videos, but for helping shape how those videos look and tell their stories.
- While Swift is making headlines with her special award and 11 nominations, Madonna leads the 2026 VMA nominations with 13 in total.
- The award adds another achievement to Swift's already impressive collection and highlights a side of her career that goes beyond singing and songwriting.
- Over the years, she has also directed videos for “Cardigan,” “Willow,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze,” “Karma,” “I Can See You,” “Fortnight,” “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.” With so many projects under her belt, Swift has continued to explore different visual styles while finding new ways to connect her music with storytelling.
- The Artist Director Honors announcement arrives as Swift is already enjoying a major showing at the upcoming 2026 MTV VMAs.
- But there were a few surprises — like an appearance by Taylor Swift and Sally Field celebrating Canada.
- A space telescope is falling out of orbit, and a rescue mission showed up just in time—but both are doomed.
