Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion, has signed a new deal with Aston Martin, committing to race for the team in the 2027 season.

Alonso, who joined Aston Martin in 2023, has taken eight podium finishes with the team, despite the team's struggles this season.

The 45-year-old driver, who is the oldest active F1 driver, said in a team statement, “I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.”

Alonso's decision was influenced by his desire to work with Adrian Newey, Aston Martin's managing technical partner, whom Alonso has long admired.

Alonso also considered the new rules and the competitiveness of his team, which has been at the bottom of the standings this season.

Lance Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, will continue to partner Alonso for a fifth consecutive year.

Alonso's most recent podium finish came at the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, and he remains one of the most experienced drivers in F1 history, with 440 grands prix under his belt since his debut in 2001.

Alonso's decision to stay with Aston Martin comes after months of speculation about his future in F1, with the driver holding meetings with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Alonso's personal performance was only one factor in his decision, as he also considered the team's future plans and the potential for improvement.

Alonso's commitment to Aston Martin is a significant boost for the team, which has struggled with chassis problems and engine issues from its Honda partnership.

Alonso remains critical of the 2026 rules, but he is optimistic about the team's future, stating, “We are preparing ourselves for the moment of truth and that will be a surprise for everybody again.”

What this adds

Alonso's decision to stay with Aston Martin was influenced by his desire to work with Adrian Newey, a key factor not previously highlighted.

The team's performance issues, particularly with the Honda engine, have been a significant challenge for Alonso and the team.

Alonso's meetings with FIA and F1 officials suggest he was considering broader implications for the sport beyond his immediate contract.
