President Donald Trump unveiled plans Monday for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, which he claims will be the largest in American history. The project is expected to create 1,750 permanent jobs and produce 7.5 million tons of steel annually in its first phase, eventually reaching 10 million tons per year.

The White House highlighted the project as evidence of Trump's economic agenda bringing heavy manufacturing back to the U.S., with just over a month until the midterms. The plant will use iron ore mined in Minnesota to produce high-grade steel for defense and critical infrastructure needs.

The administration says the project will create a fully domestic supply chain, strengthening U.S. steel production and supply chains. The first phase of the steel plant and the Minnesota mine together represent nearly $18 billion in investment.

The White House also noted that federal data showed prices for iron and steel rising between April 2025 and April 2026, despite increased domestic production. This underscores the administration's efforts to revitalize the U.S. steel industry and support local communities.

If completed as planned, the Iowa plant alone would have an annual output equivalent to roughly one-tenth of the entire U.S. steel production. The project represents a significant expansion of American steel-making capacity.
