Russian Drone Hits Kyiv's Science Academy, Killing One
Confirmed
In Short: A Russian drone hit the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv on Monday, killing at least one person and injuring several others, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

A Russian drone hit the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv on Monday, killing at least one person and injuring several others, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The president of the national academy, Anatoliy Zagorodny, said the blast struck while many staff members were inside. He emphasized that the academy is a civilian scientific institution and not connected with the military.
The attack also hit a nearby private medical center, killing at least one person and injuring others.
In addition to the academy and the medical center, Russian drones struck non-residential buildings in Kyiv's Obolonskyi, Darnytskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts, according to Klitschko.
Zelenskyy called on Western countries to intensify their pressure on Russia, stating that every Russian attack is preventable if the international community applies total pressure.
The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that Ukraine will have to pay a price for its actions in recent months, referring to Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory.
Russian strikes over the past week have hit apartment blocks, offices, warehouses, and data centers across the capital, killing and wounding civilians almost daily.
Ukraine is racing to develop and manufacture interceptors capable of bringing down the drones, as the interception rate for jet-powered drones is currently at 57 percent.
Zelenskyy detailed a report from Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) which showed that Russia had launched a new wave of mobilization for its military, a claim Putin dismissed as “utter nonsense.”
What this adds
The attack on the National Academy of Sciences marks a new phase in the conflict, with Russia increasingly targeting cultural and scientific landmarks in Kyiv.
Ukraine's Third Army Corps has recaptured 68 square miles from Russian forces since the start of Operation Vivaldi, which has seen the conversion of Soviet-era BTR-60 armored personnel carriers into kamikaze vehicles.
The Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences building was set ablaze, while Education and Sciences Minister Andrii Butenko reported that one of the ministry's buildings was also damaged.
A Ukrainian official told Kyiv Independent that Ukraine would agree to stop attacking Russian refineries, but only if Russia also agrees to an energy truce, a condition Kyiv has not yet accepted.
