The urgency behind Poland's push for the base was underscored by a recent airspace violation. A Russian Mi-8 military helicopter briefly entered Polish airspace from Russia’s Kaliningrad region, staying for 42 seconds and penetrating up to 300 meters into Polish territory near Braniewo.
Polish military authorities said the brief violation indicated Moscow was testing NATO air defenses. Polish radar systems tracked the helicopter throughout the incursion, prompting fighter aircraft to scramble and ground-based air defense units to be placed on standby.
Nawrocki stated that the establishment of the base is 'only a matter of time' and seemed optimistic that construction could be completed before Trump’s term ends in 2029. He also expressed hope that Trump would be able to attend the inauguration of the base.
