Hawaii Braces for Hurricane Nolo as Mexico Faces Polo

Residents on Hawaii's Big Island are bracing for potentially life-threatening and catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Nolo, which is expected to approach the island as early as Friday.
Hurricane Nolo, currently a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, is projected to drop up to 20 inches of rain, raising the possibility of severe flooding and mudslides.
According to Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, people should seek shelter immediately and remain there through Saturday.
Crews on the Big Island spent hours Friday building berms to guide water and move large debris in preparation for the worst of the rain.
Meanwhile, Mexico is still under threat from Hurricane Polo, which has brought storm conditions to parts of the western coast and is expected to skirt Guerrero state.
Guerrero, which has been repeatedly pummeled by hurricanes in recent years, is bracing for heavy rain and mudslides as Polo moves toward the Baja Peninsula.
The National Hurricane Center warns that the storm surge from Nolo could reach 1 to 3 feet, creating large and dangerous waves and coastal flooding.
Hawaiian Electric, the state's primary utility, said crews that had been helping restore power in Kauai after Hurricane Lowell would return to Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island in preparation for the coming storm.
Maui could also see heavy rainfall and potential life-threatening flooding and mudslides, forecasters said.

Hurricane Nolo is an active tropical cyclone south of the Hawaiian Islands, currently threatening to impact the Big Island. The nineteenth named storm and ninth hurricane of the 2026 Pacific hurricane season, Nolo first formed as a tropical depression on September 13.
