GWAR Founding Member Chuck Varga Dies at 68

In Short: Chuck Varga, a founding member of the heavy metal band GWAR, died Friday after a battle with cancer.
GWAR bassist Casey Orr, known as Beefcake the Mighty, announced Varga's death on Facebook, noting that Varga died peacefully alongside his wife, Bambi.
Varga, born in 1958, was a multidisciplinary artist who created and portrayed GWAR’s Sexecutioner character from 1985 until his retirement from performing in 2021.
Orr paid tribute to Varga, saying he was 'one of a kind' and 'most likely being welcomed into Valhalla right now' by the late GWAR members Dave Brockie and Cory Smoot.
Varga left the band in 1997 but continued to make occasional appearances until 2017. He also founded Hyperreal Productions, a costume and set design company.
In June, GWAR launched a fundraiser to help cover Varga’s medical expenses, including cancer treatments and hospice care.
Bob Gorman, known as Bonesnapper, highlighted Varga’s contributions to the band and the Slave Pit collective, noting his influence on the band’s visual identity.
Varga’s work as a performer and artist helped define GWAR’s unique mythology and visual language, leaving a lasting impact on the band’s world.
Varga studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and co-founded Slave Pit Studios in Richmond, Virginia, where he helped develop the art-driven project that became GWAR.
GWAR became a favorite in the Richmond area before expanding their fanbase nationwide, receiving Grammy nominations in 1993 and 1996.
Varga’s death marks the loss of one of the key figures who helped shape GWAR before the band became the internationally recognized heavy metal institution it is today.
