Four Pain Types Identified in Inflammatory Myopathies
Developing
In Short: Researchers identified four pain phenotypes in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), ranging from localized, flare-related pain to widespread, constant fibromyalgia-like pain.

Researchers identified four pain phenotypes in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), ranging from localized, flare-related pain to widespread, constant fibromyalgia-like pain.
The study's authors noted that these findings underscore the varied nature of myositis-related pain and could guide future research and treatment approaches.
About 93% of patients in the most severe pain group met the criteria for fibromyalgia.
However, the cross-sectional survey design of the study did not allow for tracking changes in pain phenotypes over time or the development of new pain features.
Objective measures of disease activity, imaging results, and treatment responses were not included, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact causes of the pain.
What's still developing
- "[The study] findings highlight the heterogeneity of myositis-related pain and may inform future mechanistic studies and phenotype-directed management strategies," the authors wrote.
