Ukrainian drones allegedly targeted oil depots in Russia's Rostov Oblast and Krasnodar Krai overnight on Sept. 24, according to local authorities. A fire broke out at an oil depot in Novotitarovskaya, Krasnodar Krai, following a drone attack, reported a Ukrainian Telegram channel.
Rostov Oblast has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. The region borders eastern Ukraine, with parts less than 100 kilometers from the front line.
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 40 Ukrainian drones over several regions, including Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai, and occupied Crimea. Rostov Oblast Governor Yury Slyusar said Russian air defenses intercepted Ukrainian drones over Taganrog and other districts.
Russian regional authorities reported two people killed and 12 injured in the TANECO attack in Krasnodar Krai. Debris from a drone damaged a gas pipeline in a residential area of Sloviansk-on-Kuban, in the Slavyansky district.
Ukraine's General Staff reported strikes on oil refineries in Krasnodar Krai and Tatarstan, as well as a facility used to launch Russian attack drones. The Slavyansky oil refinery in Sloviansk-on-Kuban and the TANECO refinery in Nizhnekamsk were targeted.
The strikes come as Ukraine continues targeting Russia's oil industry and military infrastructure to disrupt fuel supplies and the production and launch of weapons used against Ukraine. The Slavyansky oil refinery is one of the largest independent refineries in southern Russia, with an annual crude oil processing capacity of about 5.2 million metric tons.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched nearly 500 strike drones at the country during the day. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted the city lacks weapons needed to intercept Russian drones and missiles.
The Russian drone was destroyed by a Ukrainian Sargan 3000 unmanned boat, marking a historic first battle between marine drones.
Russian missile strikes hit two major Ukrainian metallurgical plants overnight on Sept. 12, killing two and injuring six, according to statements from Zaporizhstal operator Metinvest and ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.
