Microsoft Quietly Retires Copilot Plus PC Brand
Confirmed
In Short: Microsoft has quietly retired its Copilot Plus PC brand, two and a half years after its launch.

Microsoft has quietly retired its Copilot Plus PC brand, two and a half years after its launch, according to reports from The Tech Buzz and The Verge.
The Copilot Plus PC brand was introduced in 2024 as a flagship identity for AI-powered Windows machines. However, the brand has now become a marketing footnote, with Microsoft's latest Surface devices abandoning the label entirely.
Microsoft Surface CVP Brett Ostrom confirmed to The Tech Buzz that the new 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop meet all technical requirements to be called Copilot Plus PCs but are not marketed under that name.
Despite partnerships with major PC manufacturers and aggressive marketing campaigns, Copilot Plus PCs struggled to differentiate themselves in a market where AI features were becoming standard across all price points.
The timing of this brand retirement coincides with a broader shift in how tech companies are approaching AI integration. The commoditization of AI has made specialized branding like Copilot Plus feel outdated almost as soon as it launched.
Microsoft's new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models technically meet Copilot Plus requirements but are not being marketed under that name, signaling a strategic retreat from what was once positioned as the future of personal computing.
The brand's demise reflects a broader reality check in the AI PC market. When Microsoft first unveiled Copilot Plus PCs in 2024, the company positioned them as the next evolution of personal computing, with enough built-in AI horsepower to handle everything from real-time language translation to advanced image processing.
Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm’s SVP of compute and gaming, told The Verge that computers offering the same experiences will “probably” not use that branding anymore.
The writing was on the wall, but now it's official - Microsoft is done with the Copilot Plus PC brand that was supposed to revolutionize how we think about AI-powered computers.
What this adds
The brand's retirement highlights the rapid evolution of the AI hardware landscape and the challenges of maintaining a specialized brand in a market where AI features are becoming standard.
What's confirmed
- "These are not called Copilot Plus PCs," Microsoft Surface CVP Brett Ostrom told the publication, confirming what many in the industry had suspected.
What's still developing
- It’s not surprising to me that Microsoft and its partners would back away.
- Back in 2024, smart minds pointed out that ( almost ) every PC would soon contain the basic levels of AI hardware that the brand was supposed to reflect.
