Chinese President Xi Jinping confirmed Thursday that two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will soon travel to Zoo Atlanta as part of a conservation partnership with China.
During a visit to the White House, Xi told reporters that the pandas would arrive 'in a few days,' marking the latest instance of Beijing using the iconic animals in 'panda diplomacy.
The pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China and will be part of a new conservation agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. noted the zoo's excitement about the new arrivals, stating, 'We can’t wait to meet Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and to welcome our Members, guests, city, and community back to the wonder and joy of giant pandas.
The pandas' arrival marks the latest chapter in the decades-long practice of 'panda diplomacy,' where China loans giant pandas to foreign countries as a gesture of goodwill and a form of soft power.
In 2024, four pandas at Zoo Atlanta were returned to China as loan agreements expired amid deteriorating U.S.-China relations.
The United States and China began their panda diplomacy in the 1970s, with Beijing gifting pandas to the U.S. as a signal of a thawing relationship between the two nations.
Zoo Atlanta’s previous agreement with China began in 1999 and lasted 25 years, highlighting the long-standing nature of these conservation partnerships.
