Eriksen Leaves Wolfsburg by Mutual Consent

In Short: Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg by mutual consent, ending his contract early, the club announced Wednesday. The decision comes just over three months after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland.
Eriksen, who joined Wolfsburg as a free agent last September, made 34 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.
In a statement, Eriksen said, “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”
Wolfsburg Managing Director of Sport Dieter Hecking confirmed the club granted Eriksen’s request to terminate his contract early. Hecking said, “Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans.”
Eriksen previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening European Championship group match against Finland in 2021. He was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) in 2022.
Eriksen’s decision to leave Wolfsburg and return to Denmark is part of his ongoing rehabilitation program. He has not played since June.
Eriksen’s career has seen him play for Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Manchester United before joining Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg, who were relegated from the top flight at the end of last season, announced Eriksen was ending his contract early “by mutual consent.”
