In Short: An airstrike hit Kandahar, killing at least three civilians, according to the UN.
An airstrike hit Kandahar, the southern Afghan city and home to the Taliban government’s supreme leader, on Thursday, according to a resident who spoke to AFP.
The United Nations reported that at least three civilians were killed in the strikes, which occurred in eastern Afghanistan. Pakistan, however, stated that the strikes killed 28 militants.
The resident heard a jet, followed by a large explosion, and observed a fire in the city center.
Afghanistan and Pakistan went to war in late February, with weeks of violence resulting in hundreds of Afghan civilian deaths, according to the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
Afghanistan’s military and government officials did not immediately respond to AFP’s requests for comment on the strike, which comes days after a deadly Pakistani bombardment in the border area.
Security issues, particularly Pakistan’s demand that Afghanistan curb the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group, have been a significant point of contention.
