Helsinki-filmi and Glassriver Launch 'Tango Metal' Series

In Short: Finland’s Helsinki-filmi and Iceland’s Glassriver are partnering on a new series titled 'Tango Metal,' set to start production later this year.
Helsinki-filmi and Glassriver, two production companies from Finland and Iceland respectively, are set to collaborate on a new series titled 'Tango Metal,' Variety reported. The series is currently in development and is scheduled to begin production later this year.
Paula Ylönen, the Finnish journalist-turned-producer, approached Glassriver with the project. She described the series as a clash between two contrasting characters: Paula, who has lost everything, and Bjarki, who seemingly has everything.
Ylönen, who used to cover Heavy Metal gigs as a journalist, said the project makes sense for both companies. 'They have an impressive track record, especially in crime and thriller series such as “Black Sands” and “Cold Haven,” and are very active in international co-productions,' she noted.
The producers are currently in advanced negotiations with commissioners in both Finland and Iceland. The series will explore the lives of Paula, whose life is at a standstill following the accidental death of her husband, and Bjarki, a father, crime detective by day, and metal band frontman by night.
Glassriver’s seasoned TV executive, Ómarsson, emphasized the importance of international partnerships for getting projects off the ground. 'Today, all countries realize that international partnerships are critical to get a project off the ground,' he said.
In addition to 'Tango Metal,' Helsinki-filmi and Glassriver are also working on a Finnish near-sci-fi adventure feature and an Icelandic TV project based on an original story, to be majority shot in Iceland.
Meanwhile, Helsinki-filmi’s 'Tell Everyone,' directed by Alli Haapasalo, is set to open domestically on October 9. The film, which won the audience prize at Sundance 2022 for 'Girl Picture,' is part of the company’s growing slate of projects.
Glassriver’s active slate includes the crime series 'Elma,' based on Eva BjörgÆgisdóttir’s best-selling book series, set to premiere next month on Síminn, Iceland’s leading streamer.

The climate disaster series 'Avalanche,' co-produced with Finland’s Whatevergroup, is currently in post-production in Finland and set for a spring 2027 premiere on Síminn.
